Founder’s Bio

About Charlie Madison, Chairman & Founder of Atlee Risk Consulting

Charlie Madison spent 17 years in traditional civil defense trial practice litigating a wide range of disputes from personal injuries and construction problems to insurance and commercial disputes. He spent the bulk of his practice handling medical malpractice cases defending hospitals and doctors, primarily from psychiatric and emergency room settings.

Madison’s experience with legal liability risk management began while in private practice, helping psychiatrists work through the immediate aftermath of patient suicides.

In 2004, Madison joined the legal department of Progress Energy—a Fortune 250 Electric Utility—where he managed a large, nationwide portfolio of disputes and litigation of all types, involving billions of dollars. He spent substantial portions of his time handling:

  • Legal Liability Risk Management
  • Incident Reviews
  • Commercial Work-Outs
  • Risk Avoidance Planning

While at Progress Energy, Madison realized that only a small portion of the litigation officer’s functions involved actual legal work. The vast majority of time was spent with management and operations responsibilities.

In May 2010, Madison formed Atlee Risk Consulting, a new venture that allowed him to combine his legal and management experience to:

  • Bring an enlightened approach to legal liability risk management to a variety of companies
  • Reduce costs to companies by outsourcing litigation management services
  • Offer highly knowledgeable and specialized expertise to other companies including an ongoing relationship with Progress Energy

Charlie Madison’s education* includes:

  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Undergraduate Degree
  • University of North Carolina School of Law, Juris Doctor Degree

Madison was admitted to the Colorado Bar (1987) and the North Carolina Bar (1994) and has earned:

  • An AV Preeminent (5 out of 5) Peer Review Rating in Martindale-Hubbell
  • Memberships in the American, North Carolina, and Colorado Bar Associations as well as the Defense Research Institute
